Getting or sending mail at Fort
Gordon is an infuriating process. The people working in the battalion
orderly room have been hand-picked as the laziest of the lazy and
will make no effort to assist you in any way (whether it concerns your mail
or filling out a form).
The post office workers are not much better. The Fort Gordon post
office is populated by degenerates rivaling the orderly room for their sheer
laziness. Do not go to the post office if you are on a tight schedule.
The slow-as-molasses postal employees will surely make you late.
Orderly room (free): You can have mail delivered to you through the
battalion. The orderly room will pickup mail from the post office, and
then sort the mail for each class. Each platoon's S1 will pick up the
mail from the orderly room and give them to each person. If you have a
package to pickup, you will get a slip of paper and then you will have to go
to the orderly room to pick up your package. The hours you can pick up
packages from the orderly room are very limited, and you must follow the
proper procedures. The battalion orderly room is filled with mail
Nazis along the lines of Jerry Seinfeld's soup Nazi. Receiving
mail through the battalion orderly room is an inefficient process.
Your mail will pass through a thousand hands before it gets to you (if it
ever gets to you). If you get your bills in the mail (with all the
moving around, I suggest you receive your bills electronically) you will be
in trouble.
Post office box ($24 for 6 mo.): You can get a box at the Fort Gordon
post office for a low fee. Make sure you get to the post office to
open a box as soon as possible, since there are only al limited number of
boxes available on post. If the person at the counter says hewill call
you when one opens up, don't believe him. Check back yourself every
couple days.
You can even share this box with a second person, just make sure you put
both names on the application form. This is the best way to get
letters and bills, since you can check your PO Box anytime. If you
receive a lot of magazines/letters/bills in the mail, I suggest you open a
PO Box.
Front desk (free, 24hr service): You can have FedEx and UPS packages delivered to the front
desk at Griffith Hall. This is much more convenient than having them delivered to the
Battalion Orderly room. You will get notified in a timely manner (the
front desk will call you) and you can pick up the package any time during
the day or night. Although the front desk is ideal for packages and
FedEx/UPS deliveries, I do not suggest you send letters/magazines/bills
there.
