NOTE:
Duty Positions change during the SOBC MapEX.
The SOBC MapEx is held 3 weeks before the end of the course (the FTX is
the second to last week, and the last week is for out-processing).
Everyone with a projected S6 job will go into the S6-track course, while
everyone else will go into the MapEx/FTX track.
During the MapEx, you will be divided up once again into platoons and
squads. Your TAC will assign new platoon leaders and squad leaders for
this exercise as well.
The MapEx starts off with a brief of your mission (usually to conduct
signal support operations for a Task Force). You will be given a
timeline to recon your mission and to prepare a mission briefing for an
officer (usually your TAC, the A company CO, and a third instructor--the
battalion commander may come to one of the briefings).
The next phase of your exercise involves a drive out into the Fort
Gordon training area (by platoon) and walk around the proposed site for your
Node Center. Each squad will then come up with their own "sand table"
diagramming where you will place the vans, antennas, and fighting positions.
Afterwards everyone will gather around each sand table and discuss the pros
and cons of positioning the equipment a certain way.
TIP: Place your vehicles in a way that they can
pack up their stuff and head out quickly. They should all be facing
the same direction, ready to go.
Do not place your mess tent near your porta-potties.
Place your porta-potties near the fence so the crap-truck doesn't have to
drive through your site to get to them.
While one platoon is conducting the walkthrough, the other platoon is
visiting the A/442 motor pool to get a close up look at the vehicles.
You will prepare the vehicles for the convoy and pack them with the help (if
you can call it that) of the A/442 soldiers. During this time, you
will also visit a fenced-in compound with several vans set up. Pay
attention when you visit this compound, this is where you will be spending
part of your FTX.
After the demonstration/walkthrough, each squad will then have to come up with a briefing
and sand table diagram detailing exactly what you will do and where you will
place your equipment. Be forewarned, your instructor will not set you
up for success with this briefing. There will be minimal guidance and
many ambiguities in the directions you do have. Try to avoid this
problem by following this tip:
TIP: Check the hard
drive of the computer in your room for a copy of the previous class's
briefing. To be safe, you can ask a member of the previous
class (BEFORE THEY LEAVE!) for a copy of their MapEx briefing.
You will have a couple days to prepare this briefing. After all
the briefings are finished, you will have to clean up your respective
briefing rooms (make sure you do this quickly so you can leave that much
sooner). Then the whole class will meet in one room to receive the
final mission briefing for the FTX.
