If you want to graduate among
the top 5 in the class or get the Kilbourne Award (Leadership award given in
each class, awardee gets an AAM) you will have to serve in a leadership
position. You must volunteer for each of these positions (except squad
leader and staff duty). Each platoon has its own leadership positions. The only
leadership position that has only one slot is the class leader.
NOTE: Duty positions change for the Map Exercise
and the Field Training Exercise at the end of the
course.
WARNING: SOBC is peer leadership at its worst.
Class leader
-must go in front of board for position
This duty position is time consuming, and you will not get any thanks
from your classmates. You will be responsible for their every
movement, and yet you have no real authority. In addition, you will
have to deal with the TAC officers on a daily basis.
Duties: Responsible for the whole class. Meets with the TAC
everyday (just about). Runs formations.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 5.
Platoon leader
-must go in front of board for position
This duty position is time consuming. In addition, you will be the
student in charge of each classroom you are in (the whole class is divided
up into two platoons, each in a separate classroom).
Duties: Responsible for the running the platoon. Responsible for
day-to-day actions in the classroom. Disseminates information to the
platoon daily.
Length of term: Duty position switches at halfway point.
Suck factor (out of 5): 4.
S1
This duty position is possibly the worst one you can pick.
You will have a constant stream of tasks to accomplish and forms to look
over. You will also have the distinct pleasure of dealing with the
orderly room low-lifes on a daily basis. It is a painstaking and
thankless job.
Duties: Accountability of personnel. Deliver mail. Collect
(and correct) TDY forms, pass forms, mileage pass forms, car inspection
forms, and any other form you can possibly think of. Schedules travel
appointments (for PCS move).
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 6.
S3
SOBC does not conduct operations, so the S3 position has no
meaning. All classes are pre-planned and placed on the ready-made
training schedule for you to use.
Duties: Put class activities on pre-made training schedules. Hand
out training schedule..
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 1.
S4
Platoon S4 is another duty position that has no meaning.
Duties: Ensures road guard vests and flashlights are brought to PT and
collected afterwards.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
S6
Duties: Builds class webpage and is responsible for disseminating
information electronically (ie handouts). Needs to have a CD burner to
copy classroom CDs to give out to the class
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
Activities officer
The activities officer is the main catalyst for class fun.
Duties: Organizes class functions and parties. This can be a fun
job if you like that sort of thing. For ideas on what to do, check our
Activities and
Travel webpages.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 3.
PT officer
The suck part of this job isn't organizing PT. That duty just gets
delegated down to your classmates (everyone is in charge of PT for a day).
The suck part is running remedial PT for your fat-body classmates.
This means you have to stay at Fort Gordon every weekend and get up early
Saturday morning so you can take the PT failures on a run. Talk about
suck.
Duties: Responsible for organizing PT. Conducts remedial PT.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 5.
Squad leader
Duties: Responsible for squad (disseminating informations,
accountability, etc).
Length of term: A couple weeks (every few weeks this duty will rotate to
someone else in your squad).
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
Financial officer
Duties: Responsible for the class. Meets with the TAC everyday
(just about). Runs formations.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
Academic officer
This is another fake position. Academic officers put out a
sign up sheet for study sessions, and hand out grades when the teachers
correct tests.
Duties: Organizes study sessions.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 1.
Volunteer officer
Students must complete 24 hours of community service.
Volunteer officers find charities
and volunteer activities for the class to participate in. Being
a designated driver can count for a certain percentage of hours. Other
volunteer hours can come from things such as the health-walks they have
along the Augusta Riverwalk (ie walk against breast cancer, heart disease,
etc), habitat for humanity, baby sitting, and tutoring school children.
By the way, the threat that you will not graduate if you do not complete all
24 hours of community service is BS (of course). You will lose your
subjective TAC points, but you will still graduate.
Duties: Keep track of volunteer hours.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
AAR officer
AARs must be conducted every day on the day's activities.
Duties: Responsible for turning in class AARs every day.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
Class historian
Duties: Responsible for taking pictures in class and at class events.
Usually the historian puts together a slide show/video presentation for the
dining out at the end of the class.
Length of term: From beginning until end.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
Staff Duty Officer
Staff Duty Officer is a daily responsibility running from 1600hrs
to 0600hrs. One officer and one NCO pull duty in the center of Greely
Hall (by the TV). SOBC students do not get the next day off. The
SDO schedule is unbalanced. The schedule starts at the beginning of
the alphabet and runs until the next class takes over. Each class has
SDO duty for about six weeks, starting at the time the previous class starts
their map exercise until your class goes into its own mapex. Everyone
with last names in the first half of the alphabet will have to pull duty,
while students with last names in the second half of the alphabet don't have
to do anything.
Duties: Sit by the phone. Watch movies.
Length of term: One evening.
Suck factor (out of 5): 2.
