OSELTAMIVIR - ORAL (oss-el-TAM-eh-veer)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Tamiflu
USES:
This
medication is used to treat illness (symptoms) caused by the flu virus
(influenza). Oseltamivir is also used to prevent the flu (e.g., in
household members exposed to a flu sufferer).
HOW TO USE:
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. You may take
this with food or milk to minimize stomach upset. Take it as soon as flu
symptoms appear or as soon as possible after you have been exposed (both
within 48 hours). If you have the flu:
Take oseltamivir (Tamiflu) twice
a day for 5 days; once in the morning and once in the evening. Complete
the entire treatment of 10 doses. To prevent the flu: Take oseltamivir (Tamiflu)
once a day for at least 7 days or take it exactly as prescribed by your
doctor. This medication works best when the amount of medicine in your
body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at the same
time(s) each day. Take this medication until the full prescribed amount
is finished, even if symptoms improve. Stopping the medication too early
may result in a relapse of the infection. Inform your doctor if your
condition worsens or if new symptoms appear.
SIDE
EFFECTS:
Nausea may occur. If this effect persists or worsens, notify your doctor
promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these unlikely
but serious side effects: dizziness, persistent cough. Tell your doctor
immediately if you have any of these very unlikely but serious side
effects: persistent weakness, fever, sore throat. If you notice other
effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS:
Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, kidney
problems. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging
in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication should be used only when
clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with
your doctor. It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
World Health Organization Official Tells
People to Buy Tamiflu
Hong Kong (dpa) - A World Health Organization (WHO) official was accused
of risking panic Tuesday by advising people to build up private
stockpiles of Tamiflu in case of a bird flu pandemic.
Peter
Cordingley, Asia regional spokesman for the body, said on a radio
phone-in show broadcast from Hong Kong Tuesday that private stockpiles
might help people survive a pandemic.
However, doctors and government officials rejected the advice, saying it
would encourage panic-buying and put further strain on limited resources
of the anti-viral drug.
Speaking on Hong Kong's RTHK radio, Cordingley said: ``We do recommend
that in the average household you do have Tamiflu if you can afford it,
and if you can find it in the present circumstances.
``It will in the case of a pandemic possibly, lower the symptoms -
that's all. It will not stop a pandemic but it might make you feel a
little bit better, it might make you feel a little bit stronger.
``In the end, you might survive rather better than if you didn't have
it.''
However Hong Kong Medical Association president Choi Kin said he was
``surprised'' at Cordingley's remarks and warned that it might set off
panic-buying of Tamiflu.
``In view of the shortage of Tamiflu on the market, this particular
expression may stir up people to go out and stockpile Tamiflu. This will
create even more stress.''
Choi said he wanted to know if there was any evidence Tamiflu would be
effective when a mutant strain of the H5N1 avian bird flu virus emerged
which enabled the disease to jump from human to human.
The Hong Kong government has also advised people not to stockpile
Tamiflu, currently available only on prescription, and warned that
improper use might render it powerless against the virus.
Tamiflu, produced by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, is currently the
only defence against H5N1 avian bird flu. An anti-viral drug, it cannot
stop the disease but can inhibit its spread.
There is a global shortage of the drug with 40 countries currently
stockpiling it and Roche has agreed to let other companies produce their
own versions of Tamiflu to address the shortage.
Roche Lifts Ban on Shipping Tamiflu to USA
Roche
Holding Ltd. said Tuesday it has lifted prior restrictions on
distributing its drug Tamiflu in the United States because of increased
reports of flu around the country and patients' resistance to other
medications.
The Swiss drug company had been limiting distribution to areas which had
reported a high incidence of flu in order to avoid patients hoarding the
drug.
Last fall, there was a huge spike in Tamiflu demand that was driven by
fears of a potential flu pandemic caused by a mutation of the bird flu
virus. Experts believe Tamiflu will be effective in treating bird flu,
should the virus mutate to a form easily transferable between humans.
But Roche decided to end restrictions as the flu becomes more prevalent
around the country. Moreover, Roche said the government now recommends
against using two other antiviral medications, amantadine and
rimantadine, for the remainder of the flu season because of high levels
of patient resistance. Citizens Buy Tamiflu and Relenza to Fight Avian Bird Flu
Worried residents and companies in Hong Kong are sweeping bird flu drugs
off pharmacy shelves as the deadly virus spreads in poultry and wild
birds in mainland China and parts of Europe.
The worry in Hong Kong is understandable. The H5N1 virus made its first
known jump to humans in the city in 1997, when it killed six people.
SARS, which killed nearly 300 people here in 2003, is also fresh in
people's minds.
Health experts have warned for months that the H5N1 avian bird flu
virus, which has killed more than 60 people in four Southeast Asian
countries since 2003, could soon mutate into a strain that is easily
passed among people. Millions could die.
At some pharmacies, store managers said they had run out of Tamiflu and
Relenza, which are known by their generic names oseltamivir and
zanamivir, about two weeks ago.
Both anti-viral drugs are considered by many doctors as an effective way
to reduce the severity of avian influenza and its complications, if
taken correctly.
Although both are prescribed drugs in Hong Kong, they had been freely
available over the counter in pharmacies until very recently. The
government began enforcing the restrictions since it warned against
indiscriminate use of the drugs.
"We sold out a few weeks ago. You need a doctor's prescription now or we
won't be able to get them for you," said one store manager at a
pharmacy.
"And even with a prescription, I don't know when you can get yours.
Supply is very tight because companies have been buying in bulk for
their own staff. I've got four orders before yours."
