Turkey Reports New Bird Flu Outbreak
By Cihan News Agency
Provincial veterinary officials detected a new
bird flu outbreak in the northwestern Turkish province of Kocaeli.
Samples taken from the dead chickens in the town of Kocaeli tested
positive for bird flu, Ankara reference hospital said on Tuesday. The
mass culling of the poultry in the town and five villages is underway.
The region is quarantined as the transit of the poultry animals was
banned.
Eighteen people were taken to the hospital after contacting with the
sick chickens. No bird flu virus was detected in the hospitalized
people.
Bird flu has recently re-appeared in the provinces of Rize, Tokat, and
Istanbul.
Bird Flu Detected in Istanbul Turkey
Bird flu cases were detected in Turkey's biggest city of Istanbul and
Black Sea province of Rize, Turkish Zaman newspaper reported on Friday.
Turkish National Coordination Center for Bird Flu was quoted as
reporting that bird flu cases were detected in ducks and chicken in
Silivri town of Istanbul.
About 2,933 poultry were culled in the town after samples from infected
ducks and chicken tested positive for bird flu, the center noted.
Veterinary officials in the northeastern province of Rize also reported
that the bird flu virus H5N1 was detected in the province, adding a
quarantine has been implemented in six areas in Rize while a mass
culling of poultry is underway.
In January, four children died of H5N1 strain of bird flu in the eastern
province of Van, but there has been no new human case of bird flu in
Turkey since Jan. 13.

Turkey confirms new bird flu cases among
poultry
Turkey confirmed on Friday three new cases of the
H5 strain of bird flu among poultry in an area to the west of Istanbul
and said culling of birds was under way.
The Agriculture Ministry said samples from the infected ducks and
chickens had been sent to Britain for further tests to ascertain whether
they had the H5N1 form of the virus, which is dangerous to humans.
Four children died of the H5N1 strain in eastern Turkey in January, the
first human fatalities outside east Asia. Eight other Turkish people who
tested positive for H5N1 have since recovered, according to World Health
Organisation (WHO) data.
The latest cases were detected in ducks and chickens in Catalca and
Silivri, both near the Sea of Marmara on the western outskirts of
Istanbul, a city of more than 12 million people. Ministry officials said
some 2,800 poultry had already been culled in Silivri.
Earlier this week, authorities said they had culled a total 2.27 million
poultry so far across the country of 72 million people in a bid to halt
the spread of the disease. They said more than 60 of a total 106
districts where bird flu has been confirmed remained under quarantine.
Quarantine in Turkey means 21-day restrictions on the movement of
poultry in the designated area and increased hygiene precautions for the
local human population.
Doctors say there has been no new incidence of bird flu among humans
since January 13.
