USES:
This
medication is used to treat illness (symptoms) caused by the flu virus
(influenza). Oseltamivir is also used to prevent the flu (e.g., in
household members exposed to a flu sufferer).
Tamiflu is for treating adults, adolescents, and pediatric patients
1year of age and older with the flu whose flu symptoms started within
the last day or two. Tamiflu is also used to reduce the chance of
getting the flu in people age 13 and older who have a higher chance of
getting the flu because they spend time with someone who has the flu.
Tamiflu can also reduce the chance of getting the flu if there is a flu
outbreak in the community.
HOW TO USE:
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. You may take
this with food or milk to minimize stomach upset. Take it as soon as flu
symptoms appear or as soon as possible after you have been exposed (both
within 48 hours). If you have the flu:
Take oseltamivir (Tamiflu) twice
a day for 5 days; once in the morning and once in the evening. Complete
the entire treatment of 10 doses. To prevent the flu: Take oseltamivir (Tamiflu)
once a day for at least 7 days or take it exactly as prescribed by your
doctor. This medication works best when the amount of medicine in your
body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at the same
time(s) each day. Take this medication until the full prescribed amount
is finished, even if symptoms improve. Stopping the medication too early
may result in a relapse of the infection. Inform your doctor if your
condition worsens or if new symptoms appear.
Roche
Now Shipping Tamiflu to USA
Roche said Tuesday it would lift all current restrictions on
distribution of its anti-viral drug Tamiflu.
According to CNBC, the Swiss firm said it would allow unlimited
distribution of the anti-influenza treatment, reversing its restrictions
that had formerly permitted distribution of the drug only in cities that
reported increased incidence of flu.
Roche's decision was reportedly based in part on a recent pronouncement
by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that other anti-viral
therapies appear to be losing effectiveness against the flu.
Tamiflu is the only currently approved treatment believed to be
effective against avian flu, which experts warn could spark a global
pandemic.
Avian Bird Flu Spreads to Europe
The deadly strain of bird flu that killed 60 people in Asia has spread
to the fringes of Europe, officials confirmed on Thursday British
scientists said the virus found in Turkish poultry was the H5N1 strain
that health experts fear will mutate into a human disease that could
kill billions of people worldwide. The results of similar tests on dead
birds from Romania are expected today.
Last night the EU health commissioner, Markos Kyprianou, urged countries
to stockpile antivirus drugs to prepare for a future pandemic. He said
the commission was proposing to set aside Û1bn ((pounds sterling)680m)
to help make and distribute antivirals and new vaccines.
Mr
Kyprianou said: "We have received confirmation that the virus found in
Turkey is an avian flu H5N1 virus. There is a
direct relationship with viruses found in Russia, Mongolia and China."
He said hundreds of millions of vulnerable people across Europe - young
children, the over 65s and those with weakened immune systems or chronic
respiratory conditions - should be given the standard flu jab, but
sought to calm fears of an imminent human pandemic spreading across
Europe.
Bird flu is a potential disaster for Europe's farmers but there is no
evidence that the virus has mutated into a form that passes easily
between people. "We don't want to create a panic at this point," said Mr
Kyprianou.
Scientists at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge, Surrey,
south of London, who carried out the new tests are expected to confirm
today whether samples from birds in Romania also contain H5N1. Local
tests have narrowed the strain to an H5 type virus.
News that H5N1 had reached Turkey triggered a series of emergency
meetings and briefings across Europe. Debby Reynolds, the UK's chief
veterinary officer, said: "This is the first time that this virus, which
has been found in Asia, Russia, Mongolia and China, has been found so
close to Europe. It shows there is a risk to the UK and this is a
developing situation, which we are monitoring closely."

Treat Bird Flu with Tamiflu and Relenza
With Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, in short supply, some attention
is turning toward Relenza, which is also known as zanamivir. Approved
the same year as Tamiflu, Relenza has been a distant also-ran.
Unlike Tamiflu, which is taken orally, Relenza requires an inhaler.
Within months of Relenza's approval, there were instances of respiratory
problems and fatalities in users who had asthma or other pulmonary
diseases. But some experts say that the inconvenience of an inhaler and
the risk of side effects were minor considerations compared with the
dangers from flu on a wide scale.
