Want to create your own website?
Perhaps you simply want a personal website for your friends and family - many long term endeavors start in this fashion.  Or maybe you are looking for something more serious such as establishing a web presence for your business.  Websites make a statement, they place you on the map, they also legitimize you as a true contender.

Creating your own website can be done at zero cost, using a free server host.  However, to have full control over your name, your options and features, you will need to start with a small investment.

GoDaddy.com Special Offer

Website Costs
1.  Buy a domain name.  This is your website address.  Upon purchase you only own the rights to the name, and you will still need to find a host for your site.  Buy your domains with www.GoDaddy.com for a mere $9 per year.

2.  Find a host.  Your host server is where your actual website will be located.  Hosts typically rent server space for nominal fees.  Different hosts offer a slew of different options, contracts, capabilities, and vary in customer service.  Investigate hosts thoroughly prior to deciding which one is right for you.  Hosts fees vary from $1 to $15 per month depending on their plan and options that you require.

Choosing a host is an important decision. You will, hopefully, have a long relationship with whatever host you choose. To make the decision you need to first decide what you need and then visit the sites of several hosting providers and evaluate what they have to offer in the light of your requirements . If you choose wisely you should get good value for money, reliability and prompt, knowledgeable support.

Deciding What You Need

Free or Paid?

For a first (or practice) site or for a personal site, free hosting can be a good solution. You will almost certainly have to put up with some ads on your site, cannot expect too much in the way of support and there will usually be restrictions on using scripts, on bandwidth and on disk space. That said many free hosts have good online support or forums where you will find other users willing to help. You may also find that the servers tend to be slow at times which will affect users of your site.

For business sites free hosting is really a no-no. Partly because of the ads, over which you have little control, partly because you will have an unwieldy domain name to deal with, such as www.thefreehost.com/usersites/yoursite/, but mainly because it projects a poor image of the business. If a business cannot afford the small amount of money it costs for paid hosting, often less than $100 per year, it is difficult to expect potential customers to take them seriously.  You won't be able to pick your own domain name, and your site will be very limited by what your free host provides - thus unless you are creating a personal site, free hosting is impractical.  Some free host servers include: http://www.freeservers.com and http://www.geocities.com.

FrontPage Extensions

If you are planning to use any of the features in Microsoft FrontPage that depend on extensions then you must choose a host that provides extensions. Better again get some recommendations from existing FrontPage users, as a start try a search for 'hosting' or 'server extensions' in the Outfront Forums.

Some hosts are undoubtedly more enthusiastic than others in their provision of extensions. With the best you will have no problems, with the less than expert you will find that extensions fail or become corrupted regularly and that help may be less than forthcoming.

How much Disk Space and Bandwidth?

Disk Space = How many pages, photos, videos, files you can save on your host server - measured in Megabytes (MB)

Bandwidth = How many times per month your users can access those pages, photos, videos, files - measured in Gigabytes (GB).

How much disk space you need will depend both on how large you expect your site to become and on the nature of the site itself. For example a Flash site, or one making extensive use of video, audio or large graphics would need more space than one that is mainly text based.

For most new sites the needs are relatively modest. Statistically the average website is less than 5MB and being swayed to a more expensive hosting plan because of a large disk space allocation may not be a great idea if you are paying for space you will never use. Make sure that there is a means of upgrading your plan should your needs change in the future.  Most sites need less than 5MB of web space, so even if you are provided with a host that tempts you with 200MB or 500MB (or "unlimited space"), be aware that you are unlikely to use that space, so don't let the 500MB space be too big a factor in your consideration when comparing with other web hosts. The hosting company is also aware of that, which is why they feel free to offer you that as a means of enticing you to host there. As a rough gauge, one of my other sites, which had about 150 pages when this article was first written, used less than 5MB for its pages and associated files.

Unless your site is likely to be extremely busy from the outset or you are making heavy use of Flash, video or audio you are unlikely to need more than the standard bandwidth provided with an 'off the shelf' hosting plan. In general as the disk space allocated increases so does the bandwidth.

To give you a rough idea of the typical traffic requirements of a website, most new sites that are not software archives or the like use less than 3GB of bandwidth per month. Your traffic requirements will grow over time, as your site becomes more well-known (and well-linked), so you will need to also check their policy for overages: is there a published charge per GB over the allowed bandwidth? Is the charge made according to actual usage or are you expected to pre-pay for a potential overage? It is better not to go for hosts that expect you to prepay for overages, since it is very hard to forsee when your site will exceed its bandwidth and by how much.

Individual Requirements
All sites have slightly different requirements and thus there is no 'one plan fits all' solution. Make a list of those feature that are most important to you and use this when comparing hosts.

For example do you need the latest version of Perl, PHP Support, a large number of POP accounts, access to a secure server or to MySQL? Perhaps things like a toll free support number matter more, or whether there is a free shopping cart provided with your hosting. It is important to get your requirements clear so that when you compare hosts you are comparing like with like.  In a nutshell - do you need database connections, advanced scripts of code capabilities?  Or are you primarily interested in text, photos, and videos on your website?

Evaluating Hosting Providers

Technical Support

This is one of the most important factors in your selection and one you can easily test before you buy. Almost all hosts make great claims for their support service, so send an email to support or phone them up with a few questions about their service. You will get a good idea of their level of knowledge, their efficiency and their willingness to work with you. If the response is sluggish or unsatisfactory can you really expect it to improve after you part with your cash?

While support via email has advantages for efficiency and cost it should also be possible to make contact by phone. If you require 24 hour, 365 day, support be prepared to pay a bit extra, employing people to provide this type of service is expensive.

Reliability and Uptime

You are looking for a host which provides at least 99% uptime, preferably higher, and can back up this claim; some allow access to their server monitoring software statistics which will verify their uptime. You could also check out their own site at www.netcraft.com as an indication of what to expect.

Be a little cautious of those claiming 100% uptime. Even if their servers are completely reliable they will need at least scheduled reboots or some downtime for maintenance and upgrading.

Internet Connection

Find a host with at least a T3 connection to the internet preferably though three different providers to ensure reliability. Fiber optic cables, good quality routers and switches and good quality hardware are also important considerations.

Cost

It is sometimes said that there are three types of host - free hosts, cheap hosts and good hosts - and there is more than a grain of truth in this. Having said that there is very good value to be had for entry-level requirements and shopping around will pay dividends.

Whatever the cost check whether there is a money back guarantee, whether there is a requirement to sign up for a minimum period and if it is easy to upgrade your hosting should the need arise.

A good way to gauge your potential web hosts versus the competition is to use one of many "web host search" websites.  We recommend using:  http://www.hostreview.com/power_search.html - enter your search criteria and see the rating for potential web hosts and see what customers have had to say about them.

Some Web Hosts that we recommend include:

www.3essentials.com

www.1and1.com

www.1planhost.com
